British Shorthair is very well-known across Europe and the USA. In the UK, half of all registered kittens at GCCF are British Shorthairs, making them one of the most popular pedigree cats.

Personality
Often compared to a living teddy bear, they combine calm dignity with genuine affection. Loyal yet independent, they bond deeply with their families without being clingy, preferring to sit beside you rather than demand attention. Intelligent and observant, they quietly “supervise” daily routines and appreciate stability. Peaceful, tolerant, and adaptable, they do well with children and other pets, while still keeping a touch of playful charm. Whether slightly more outgoing males or the more composed females, British Shorthairs offer a steady, thoughtful companionship that feels both comforting and quietly refined.

Grooming tips
British Shorthairs are wonderfully low-maintenance, which makes them an excellent choice for owners who prefer a breed that’s easy to care for. A gentle weekly brushing is usually enough to keep their coat healthy (with a little extra during shedding seasons), and they rarely need baths. Simple routines like regular nail trims, basic dental care, and occasional ear checks will keep them looking and feeling their best. If you’re hoping for a calm companion without an intensive grooming commitment, this breed is a very practical and reassuring option.
Health advice
The British Shorthair is generally a strong and well-built breed, but owners should be aware of two inherited conditions sometimes seen in this line: Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).
While these conditions may not show obvious symptoms in the early stages, potential warning signs can include increased thirst and urination, reduced appetite, vomiting, unusual lethargy, breathing difficulties, rapid heartbeat, or sudden weakness in the hind legs. Because signs can be subtle at first, regular veterinary check-ups and appropriate health screenings are important to ensure early detection and proper care.
Fun fact
One charming piece of history about this breed is that many historians believe the British Shorthair — with its round face, full cheeks, and signature “smiling” expression — may have inspired the iconic Cheshire Cat in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. It’s easy to see why so many cat lovers make that connection!
This breed is especially well-suited if you
Have a busy schedule and prefer a pet that doesn’t require intensive grooming
Live in an apartment or a smaller living space
Would appreciate a calm companion to unwind with after a long day
Have children at home or other pets in the family
